Timeline of Key Events
Pre-Apocalypse:
- Okeke create many different buildings and different technology.
- Okeke are punished by Ani, and she decides to wipe out their buildings and writes in the Great Book to make the Okeke slaves to the Nuru.
Post-Apocalypse:
- Najeeba is raped by Daib in a small Okeke village and becomes pregnant with Onye
- Najeeba leaves a small Okeke village and heads East.
- Najeeba gives birth to Onye.
- Najeeba and Onye travel in the desert for six years and stay in Jwahir.
- Onye meets Fadil when she is six years old.
- Fadil and Najeeba get married, and he becomes Onye's step-father.
Five years later:
- Onye shapeshifts into a vulture, and she meets Mwita for the first time without actually knowing who he is.
- Onye, Binta, Luyu, and Diti all go through the Eleventh Rite ritual together.
- Onye also has her first spiritual meeting with “the red eye,” aka Daib.
- Mwita and Onye begin dating.
- Mwita starts to teach Onye how to shapeshift and some basic magic.
A year and a half later:
- Onye begs Aro multiple times to teach her the Great Mystic Points, and he denies her because she is a female.
- Oyne goes to the Ada, Aro's wife, asking her to convince Aro to teach her about the Mystic Points.
- The storyteller from the West comes to Jwahir and tells the people of Jwahir about all of the violence the Nuru have been committing towards the Okeke.
- Onye visits the House of Osugbo to ask Nana the Wise to convince Aro to teach her, but she is denied again.
Three years later:
- Onye violently attacks Aro because he refuses to teach her yet again.
- Fadil dies, and at his funeral, Onye makes his body breathe again, but he does not fully come back to life since his spirit has passed on.
- Aro agrees to teach Onye the Great Mystic Points.
- Onye passes initiation.
- Mwita and Onye have sexual intercourse for the first time.
- Onye tells her friends about her powers.
- Onye continues to study with Aro for three and a half years.
Three and a half years later:
- Onye goes to the supermarket, and, in retaliation for people making comments about her, she forces them to watch vivid images of her father raping her mother.
- Onye, Mwita, Binta, Luyu, Diti, and Fanasi all leave Jwahir to travel West. Binta poisons her father before leaving.
- Several weeks into their journey, Binta and Diti leave the group to go to Banza, and Onye, Fanasi, Mwita, and Luyu come into the town to find them.
- Onye is sexually harassed in Banza because the men think she is a prostitute.
- Onye meets the Ada's twins, Fanta and Nuumu and attempts to heal Nuumu of her scoliosis.
- Nuumu dies while Onye is trying to heal her.
- Onye heals the girls' cut from the Eleventh Rite.
- The group arrives in Papa Shee, and Binta is killed standing up for Onye.
- The group meets the Vah– the “red people.”
- Onye is attacked by the masquerade's needles and falls ill.
- Onye befriends the Kponyungo, a dragon-like creature, and turns herself into one and travels to see “the green” ; she would later find out the Kponyungo is her mother.
- Onye attacks her father in the spirit world, and he savagely beats her and leaves a mark on her hand that will kill her if not treated.
- Ting changes the juju on Onye's hand and heals her.
- Diti and Fanasi leave the group behind and travel back to Jwahir.
- Onye and her friends leave the Vah and continue traveling West.
- Onye, Mwita, and Luyu go into Durfa to rewrite the Great Book.
- Mwita and Onye come face to face with Daib.
- Daib attacks and kills Mwita, while Mwita reveals that he has known this is how he was supposed to die all along.
- Onye uses juju to make herself pregnant which has lasting effects for the people who are in the radius of Durfa: all virile men are killed, while the fertile women are impregnated and given magical powers.
- Luyu is killed by the men trying to stop Onye.
- Onye succeeds and rewrites the Great Book.
- Onye goes to prison (in or near Durfa) and is stoned to death.
- Another ending is rewritten for Onye, who travels to reunite with Mwita in “the green.”
