Welcome to the Millikin University web case book on Toni Morrison’s novel, Beloved. This web case book was written by students at Millikin enrolled in English 202 Writing About Literature for the Fall 2007 semester. We chose to do an in-depth study of Beloved because the novel presents readers with a variety of perspectives and issues to be explored through literary criticism, therefore providing us with the chance to make original critical and scholarly contributions to contemporary studies of the novel. We hope you will learn more about critical approaches to writing about literature from this case book, and we hope you will enjoy reading our sample essays demonstrating the use of each approach included in this case book.
Three English majors—Sarah Corso, Amber McKinney, and Pat Steadman—joined Dr. Braniger as members of an editorial board for the class. The board provided editorial oversight and guidance in the development of this case book, selecting the best sample essays to publish.
